M2.2 & 2.4 Personal Care Products
Module 2.2 Personal Care Products
The personal care products that I decided to search were Colgate toothpaste and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I decided to search for these products because this is something that I use everyday. I honestly thought that the Colgate toothpaste toxicity rate was going to be higher than what it is. Seeing that the overall hazard is low is actually surprising. I think that the reason why I had these expectations for the toothpaste is because of things that I had heard in the past regarding toothpaste and how there are other healthier options. I do not think that I am going to change my behavior with the tooth paste because I am kind of picky with the toothpaste that I use. I think that if the toxicity rate was higher then I would look into purchasing something else.
Module 2.4 Jane Hoolihan and Advocacy Organizations on Toxics in Personal Care Products
The Jane Hoolihan and Advocacy Organizations on Toxics in Personal Care Products video really brought some awareness to the everyday products that we use. I think that the reason why some people continue to use unsafe products after finding out that they are unsafe is because they do not see the long term health effects at the time. I stopped using relaxers in my hair nine years ago because I began to see the negative effect that it was having on my hair. If I did not see the negative effects then I probably would have continued using it.
My husband flew back from Nigeria to London last week and he told me about how the flight attendants on British Airways walked up and down the aisles of the plane spraying air freshener on the passengers because some of the passengers were not wearing deodorant. I think that is horrible treatment. What if there were people on the plane that was allergic to the fragrance or wanted to avoid exposure? That is definitely going against their rights and I am surprised that no one has complained about it and that they are allowed to do that.
I took away a lot of information from this video. I am going to make sure that I read the labels to avoid toxins that can do harm to my body.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your post.
Regarding the tooth paste, as a dentist I can tell you that we have more than 90 types on the shelves in the market and all of them safe for use, to choose the right tooth paste is a personal decision but according to American Dental Association, the best tooth pate should contain fluoride level at least 1,000 parts per million of fluoride because the fluoride will help the teeth to be stronger and more cavity resistant.
Wether the information in the video are completely true and from trusted sources, we need to be aware from the chemicals that we expose to it everyday and also we need to read the labels, check the ingredients and do more search about the harmful effect that can cause. Fortunately we have now more options in the market to go for organic components and safer cosmetic products that make us to eliminate the terrible effects form the chemicals.
DeleteWow I never knew that thanks for the info! What kind do you use Ali?
DeleteBrittany, I enjoyed your blog post. I also appreciated Ali's comment on the toothpaste!
ReplyDeleteI am surprised by your comment on the air freshner being used on your husband's flight. It is interesting to think that in just two weeks in this course we realize how harmful products like that may be. Previously, I may have though that they were being courteous and thoughtful of other passengers for doing that. Now I agree with you! People should have every right to use or not use products without posing judgement from others.
